How Search Engines Work?

Search engines are there to provide their customers with the most relevant information, they want to make sure their customers find the information they are after in the fastest possible time. When a user searches the search engine examines it’s database and returns the results it feels are more relevant to the persons search.

When search engines return results they do so based on certain criteria, in the early days of search engines the only information they went on was the information on the website, however now this is only one factor they look at. Today there are teams of people examining websites and signals to see how they can make sure the websites returned for a search are the most relevant and helpful to the person searching.

How Do Search Engines Determine which site is the most relevant?

Search engines determine which site is the most relevant by which site or page is the most popular. In today’s world there are many ways they can assess how popular a webpage is from social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to incoming links and the popularity of the sites linking. Links are an important factor, think of a link as a vote the stronger the vote the more popular your webpage must be.

This data is not determined manually, the search engines do not complete manual reviews of each and every website they have a spider that crawls and stores specific data from each and every website on the internet and store it in their databases. Once stored they can run mathematical equations called algorithms, to work out which websites are the best to return for specific results and which of them will be most useful to the people searching.

These algorithms are getting more and more complex, there are teams of people working on different aspects, of the algorithms and developing more factors in the aim of producing the best results and making sure the most relevant page is listed number one.

How to improve your position?

At first glance it seems that you have to live with the position that you are given however there are things you can do to help show Google you are worth of a higher position.

INFORMATION FROM GOOGLE

Here are some steps you can take to get better rankings in Google:

Write your pages for your visitors, not the search engines. Make sure that visitors to your site will get some benefit from visiting the website. We see many sites that do not tell the users much at all, you need to include more than one paragraph and your address. Some people try to deceive search engines by providing different information to them than your users, they can tell and your will be penalised, this technique is known as cloaking and is frowned upon.

Make sure you have a clear menu structure, every page of your website should be accessible from at least one static link.

Make sure that your website is useful, if you look at who is already number one for the terms you think you should rank for, you will see they provide visitors with lots of information about the services they provide. You can write lots of information about most subjects but some thought needs to go into it. I single page website including a couple of photos and an address will not get you to number one.

Use descriptive URLS and avoid duplicate content. Make sure your www. address and the non www. address point to the same page.

INFORMATION FROM BING

Below are some factors that can effect your Bing search position.

Ensure a clean, keyword rich URL structure is in place

Avoid using Flash, Javascript and Ajax coding to display information this is harder for them to read and can effect positioning.

Create lots of fresh content including your keywords. Bing like to see the information you provide is fresh and up to dat.

Show text as text don’t use images, search engines cant read text in images so you are loosing out on providing search engines important information on your site.
